Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about SmartPrint.
SmartPrint automatically discovers printers on your local network using Bonjour/mDNS. Make sure your printer is turned on, connected to the same WiFi network as your Mac, and supports network printing. You can also click "Find Printers" on the Home screen or "Add Printer" in Preferences to open macOS System Settings where you can manually add a printer. USB-connected printers should appear automatically.
SmartPrint works with any printer that is compatible with macOS, including printers from HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Samsung, Xerox, Ricoh, and many more. The app uses macOS native printing APIs, so if your printer works with your Mac through System Settings, it will work with SmartPrint. This includes WiFi, USB, and Bluetooth printers.
SmartPrint supports PDF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, TXT, and RTF files. You can drag and drop any of these files into the Print Document view or use the Browse Files button. For web pages, you can enter any URL and print directly from the app.
The free version includes up to 5 printed pages per day, basic scanning, and printer discovery. SmartPrint Pro unlocks unlimited printing, all PDF tools (merge, split, compress, lock, etc.), photo layouts, passport photos, print history, OCR text extraction, web page printing, QR code generator, label printing, booklet printing, and more.
To cancel your SmartPrint Pro subscription, open the App Store on your Mac, click your profile icon, select "Account Settings," then "Subscriptions," and click "Manage" next to SmartPrint. From there you can cancel the renewal. You'll continue to have Pro access until the end of your current billing period. Alternatively, you can manage subscriptions from System Settings > Apple ID > Media & Purchases.
If you've purchased SmartPrint Pro and need to restore it on a new Mac, simply install the app from the Mac App Store using the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase. Open the app, go to the paywall screen, and tap "Restore Purchases." Your Pro features will be restored automatically.
If your printer shows as offline, try these steps: (1) Make sure the printer is powered on and not in sleep mode. (2) Check that the printer is connected to the same WiFi network as your Mac. (3) Restart the printer and wait 30 seconds. (4) Click "Refresh" in SmartPrint to rescan for printers. (5) Try restarting your Mac. (6) Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners and check if the printer appears there. If it doesn't appear in System Settings, you may need to install the printer manufacturer's driver.
No. SmartPrint processes all documents, photos, scans, and PDFs locally on your Mac. Your files never leave your device and are never uploaded to any server. All printing is done directly between your Mac and your printer over your local network or USB connection. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
SmartPrint uses Apple's built-in Vision framework to perform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on scanned documents and images. This means all text recognition happens on your Mac — nothing is sent to the cloud. Simply scan a document or select an image, enable the OCR toggle, and the extracted text will appear in the OCR panel. You can copy the text to your clipboard or save it as a searchable PDF.
